Provincial Pilot Ending, However

Red Deer RCMP continue to offer online criminal record checks

City officials say Red Deerians will still be able to complete criminal record and vulnerable sector checks online, despite cancellation of the provincial pilot program.

This week, the Alberta RCMP announced that they would end their pilot online criminal record check program, but Red Deer RCMP will continue to offer online checks as the detachment uses a separate, independently created system.

The City of Red Deer and Red Deer RCMP launched their online record check portal in December 2020 in response to COVID-19 restrictions. Volunteers, new employees and others requiring a criminal record or vulnerable sector check can apply and pay online quicky, easily and securely, say City officials.

The Red Deer RCMP detachment processed nearly 7,000 record checks last year and more than three quarters of all applications were submitted online, officials add. Completing the online form takes only minutes and allows you to track the progress of your application.

Online criminal record checks are available on the City website at www.reddeer.ca/check.

Elsewhere, following a six-month pilot program for online criminal record checks, the Alberta RCMP will be ending the pilot effective Mar. 6, 2022. The pilot of the tool began in the fall of 2021 in select detachments across the province in an effort to provide an option for efficient access to the public.

Mounties acknowledge that having an online tool is valuable but the platform model used became a complex undertaking for 12 detachments and would not have been able to be efficiently expanded throughout the province.

Although the online criminal record check pilot tool will no longer be utilized, RCMP say there have been several key points of learning throughout the six month pilot period. The technical and logistical insights are expected to prove useful for future tool development when the Alberta RCMP explores similar options in the future for a more user- friendly platform that could benefit Albertans.

Being able to support the public with access to policing services online is a goal for the Alberta RCMP.

To obtain a criminal record check, the public may visit their local detachment or visit the RCMP website at https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/criminal-record-checks for more information.

The pilot program has been available to the Bashaw, Cochrane, Consort, Drayton Valley, Drumheller, Grande Prairie, Provost, St. Albert, St. Paul, Sundre, and Sylvan Lake detachments.
