Alberta government wins Golden Scissors Award

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is awarding their Golden Scissors Award to Alberta Labour and Immigration for the Labour Mobility Act.

Passed in late 2021, the act eliminates credentialing barriers and allows highly skilled, certified professional workers from across Canada to bring their expertise to Alberta, regardless of where in the country they received their professional credentials.

“Alberta’s economy is growing quickly and we need to have enough skilled workers to fill jobs and keep the recovery going. That’s exactly what the Labour Mobility Act will do. I’m glad the CFIB has recognized Alberta’s efforts to create more jobs, a stronger workforce, and a faster economic recovery,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

The Golden Scissors Award recognizes governments that have shown leadership in cutting red tape, producing meaningful and positive results for businesses across Alberta.

“The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is happy to present its annual Golden Scissors Awards to the government of Alberta for creating wins through innovative thinking to reduce red tape. Alberta is recognized for streamlining the approval of out-of-province credentials for health and other professionals,” said Laura Jones, Executive Vice-President and Chief Strategic Officer. “This will allow registered nurses, pharmacists, dental assistants and midwives from other provinces to start working in Alberta with fewer headaches for them and no reduction in standards for the province — a win for both the professionals and the public they serve.”

Since 2019, Alberta’s government has eliminated more than 21 per cent of the province’s regulatory burden. As a result, Albertans and Alberta job creators have saved more than $1.2 billion.

The province released in a statement, “these changes will help Alberta’s job creators meet their labour market needs with skilled professionals to further diversify our economy.”

“I want to thank the CFIB for this award. Alberta’s government is continuously looking at ways to reduce the regulatory burden for Albertans and job creators. The Labour Mobility Act removes barriers and makes it easier for certified professional workers to come live and work in our province. By encouraging these professionals to move here, it helps get Albertans back into jobs and grows and diversifies our economy,” said Tyler Shandro, Minister of Labour and Immigration.

Earlier this week, Alberta’s government declared Red Tape Reduction Week in the province. Reducing red tape is part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan to create jobs, diversify the economy and strengthen the workforce with skilled workers in all sectors of the economy.

“Red Tape Reduction Week is about recognizing our work to reduce red tape for Albertans. The Golden Scissors Award celebrates the hard work and leadership that has made it easier for trained, out-of-province professionals to work in Alberta and is a positive step to help Alberta’s Recovery Plan. Thank you to everyone within Alberta’s government who contributed to this innovative initiative. It’s another example of how everyone wins when we remove barriers to help businesses attract the skilled workers they need to grow our economy,” said Tanya Fir, Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction.
