Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines more accessible over next few weeks

Starting next month, increased options will be available for families seeking to vaccinate their children against COVID-19 at pharmacies, physician offices and AHS clinics.

From March 2-16, AHS clinics across the province will provide pediatric vaccines for children aged five to 11 on a walk-in basis. The list of clinics and hours will be available on the AHS website. After March 16, demand will be assessed to determine if the expanded services should continue.

“We are constantly looking for ways to make vaccination easier for Albertans of all ages. That is why we are increasing options for families who have made the choice to get their children protected. Extended hours and walk-in availability will help working families take their children for vaccines at times that work best for them,” said Jason Copping, Minister of Health.

Approximately 150 pharmacies and some physician offices will also offer pediatric vaccines starting March 2. Some pharmacies may also offer pediatric vaccines on a walk-in basis.

A small group of select AHS clinics will begin to accept walk-ins for children beginning this week.

From March 2-16, all AHS vaccination clinics will have spots available on weekdays from 3 to 8 p.m. and on weekends from noon to 6 p.m. to accommodate walk-ins and appointments.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies with extended hours and experience vaccinating children will also administer pediatric vaccines to children.

Pharmacies in the Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat and Fort McMurray areas will be added, focusing on local geographic regions with under-vaccinated populations of five to 11 year olds, as well as 17 pharmacies in rural communities.

Walk-in appointments may take longer than pre-booked appointments. Parents and guardians can still book appointments for children ages five and older online by using the Alberta vaccine booking system or by calling 811.

A number of physician clinics that are currently offering COVID-19 vaccinations and have expressed interest in vaccinating children will receive doses of pediatric vaccines to administer for children ages five and up from March 2-16. They will contact their current patient rosters directly.
