Hunting Hills students present Mamma Mia! after two-year hiatus

Feb 5, 2022 | 10:54 AM

Theatre students at Hunting Hills High School are set to return to the stage after two years off thanks to the pandemic.

Performances of Mamma Mia! run March 2-5 at the Memorial Centre.

More than 50 students from Grades 9-12 are taking part.

“Students audition into this class and they have to learn to be triple threats in a span of four months. Students are acting, singing and dancing,” says Piper Rempel, Director, adding rehearsals for the production take place beyond regular school hours.

“It’s a really campy show and I think it’s silly and fun and not something that takes itself too seriously. It’s been really great for our students to come back into theatre with something really over the top. It has been really fulfilling for them.”

Rempel, who says the students are performing at a really high level of excellence, also talks about the production’s musical elements.

“The score is written at Grade 8 music level, and our band students usually play music between Grades 3.5 and 5. Our Grades 9, 10 and 11 students have been learning it since October,” she says. “They saw the challenge of doing a pit band and, guided by Band Director Amanda Fitch, they took it and ran with it.”
