Some outdoor skating surfaces in Red Deer to open this weekend

Dec 10, 2021 | 4:09 PM

Skating surfaces at Bower Ponds and Westlake are ready for public use on Dec. 11.

However, outdoor rinks and the Anders’ skating surface will need a little more time, according to City officials.

Parks and Recreation staff have been busy getting outdoor rinks ready for the winter season, but warm weather and a lack of snow have caused a delay this year for getting the outdoor rinks open just yet.

Officials say when those facilities are ready to open, the lights will be turned on, the nets will be put in place, and the community will be notified.

The City would like to remind skaters that the use of helmets is recommended at all times, and hockey is not permitted at Bower Ponds or the ice skating oval at Setters Place at Great Chief Park.

At Bower Ponds, outdoor washrooms are available to the public daily from 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and are found on the south side of the Bower Ponds Pavilion. The Pavilion will be officially launching the winter season starting Saturday, Dec. 18, offering; skate rentals, concession, indoor skate changing and warming.

Setters Place at Great Chief Park will open Friday, Dec. 17. You can check the City’s website at www.reddeer.ca for available skating times. Indoor heated change rooms and washrooms are available at this location. Admission fees are required to access the ice oval at Setters Place.
