Stay of proceedings in fatal crash involving cyclist near Red Deer

There has been a stay of proceedings in the case of an Edmonton man charged in a fatal crash involving a cyclist on the QEII Highway near Red Deer two years ago.

A stay of proceedings means the legal process has been put on hold indefinitely and can be temporary or permanent.

Edwin Aklamanu, 39, was previously scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench this week.

Aklamanu was charged with failure to provide a breath sample causing death and operating a motor vehicle while impaired causing death, both of which were stayed on Nov. 25, 2021.

At about 12:45 a.m. on Sept. 14, 2019, Blackfalds RCMP responded to a collision involving a cyclist on Highway 2 between Highway 11 and 32 Street. Police say an SUV was travelling southbound when it collided with the cyclist.

The 32-year-old male cyclist from Red Deer was pronounced dead at the scene, and was later identified by friends as Ryan Litwin (Taylor).

Taylor tragically left behind a spouse who has nearing the end of her maternity leave at the time, as well as a two-year-old son and 10 month-old son.
