Due to current freezing and thawing temperatures, thin ice formation around waterways and rivers may lead to unforeseen dangers of falling through.
Red Deer County is reminding residents to be safe around bodies of water during this time.
“Staying off the ice even though it may look thick is highly recommended” said Deputy Chief Ivan Dijkstra. Dijkstra noted that last week Protective Services personnel responded, on two separate occasions, where they had to retrieve pets from semi-frozen waters.
If you witness someone fall through the ice, call 911, and never attempt to rescue an individual or pet by yourself that has fallen through the ice.
