Staple Red Deer event adds new splash to community

Oct 14, 2021 | 4:58 PM

The former Red Deer PCN Women’s Fun Run will be moving forward as a fresh event next year, as the Red Deer PCN Aloha Run, picking up the torch from the original event’s 10 year legacy.

Despite navigating two of its 10 years in a restricted environment, the Red Deer PCN Women’s Fun Run, led by Val Jensen, was regarded as an annual bright spot each Mother’s Day weekend for participants, family, and the community. Officials note the event celebrated its 10th and final year on May 8, 2021.

But with the continued support of title sponsor Red Deer Primary Care Network, officials say a small group was working behind the scenes to see the energy and momentum of the event continue.

“I promised myself that I would see the event to 10 years,” said Jensen, in a press release. “I was preparing for our final year when a long-standing member of our committee, Bre Fitzpatrick, asked about leading it going forward with a few twists. I’m looking forward to seeing the energy, activity, and community continue for the over 2000 people this event reaches annually.”

The new event will look forward to welcoming many past participants, volunteers, and community partners on the upcoming date of Saturday, May 7 over the 2022 Mother’s Day weekend. While the event will have some familiar elements, coordinators are looking forward to offering more family-friendly runs in Red Deer’s Capstone location, and featuring the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC) as the 2022/2023 Charity of Choice.

“We are excited to be working with this event and this team; we all have some exciting things up our sleeves! We were all especially pleased to be able to announce this news during October as it represents Child Abuse Prevention Month,” said Mark Jones, CACAC’s CEO.

“Being involved in this event for over eight years has shown me the importance of inspiring people of all ages to get moving together,” said event coordinator Bre Fitzpatrick. “The heart of the Red Deer PCN Aloha Run is about honouring all of the elements of this event that contribute to community building, the care shared amongst the participant family, and the many local partners who unite to make it possible. Val has been a great community leader for sport, having her stay on as the Creative Director is the icing on the cake!”

Officials say additional details will be released in the following months, with the event team to have more details to share shortly.
