Red Deer RCMP have now laid charges following an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision this week that claimed the life of a pedestrian.

Melvin Will, 83, of Red Deer, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and for failing to provide a breath sample.

On Sept. 14, at 12 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian located at 48 Street and 52 Avenue. Upon police arrival, Red Deer Emergency Services were on scene providing medical assistance to the pedestrian.

Mounties say their preliminary investigation revealed that a truck was heading southbound on 52 street. However, as the truck turned eastbound onto 48 Street, a pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk.

Medical treatment was provided to the pedestrian; however a 68-year-old woman of Red Deer was declared deceased at the scene. RCMP say the identity of the deceased will not be released.

The road was closed for approximately two hours while police conducted their investigation.

Following a judicial hearing, Will was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Oct. 6.
