Charges stayed in local shooting incident

Jun 2, 2021 | 6:00 PM

A stay of proceedings has been ordered for two men charged in a shooting outside Parkland Mall in Red Deer last year.

Casey Alan Cousins, 28, and Jacob Granite Doubt, 24, both of Calgary, were facing 18 and 17 charges each, respectively, but saw them stayed in Red Deer provincial court on Friday.

The pair were each charged with attempted murder with a firearm, multiple firearms related counts, possession of a stolen vehicle, and failing to comply with release orders.

The stay means proceedings on the matter have now been halted, with the Crown having up to one year to resurrect the case.

The incident took place on June 29, 2020 when Red Deer Mounties responded to a shooting that happened outside the Parkland Mall around 11:30 a.m.

One male was injured and taken to hospital.

Police say the shooting appeared to be targeted and was not random, noting that the suspect vehicle, a 2016 white Jeep Grand Cherokee with black rims, tinted windows and tail-lights, was stolen out of Blackfalds four days earlier.

The vehicle was located in Calgary later that day and seized by the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

On July 7, 2020, two suspects were arrested.

Casey Cousins was apprehended in Calgary with the assistance of CPS, while Jacob Doubt was arrested in Vanderhoof, B.C. with the assistance of Mounties in that community.

RCMP said last July that additional individuals may have also been involved.
