Jun 1, 2021 | 10:40 AM

A Lacombe Composite High School initiative is on the shortlist today for a provincial award recognizing individuals and organizations that raise the bar in addressing local, regional, and global environmental and climate issues.

The school’s “EcoVision” initiative aims to grow student leaders through student led projects.

Everything, EcoVision attempts, needs to enhance:

  • Improving Our Environment – improve our air, water or land
  • Enhancing Our Education – supplement the learning of individuals
  • Collaborating with Our Community – increase the collaboration and sharing of ideas, skills and expertise locally, provincially and globally.

This year’s projects include Roofs 4 Kids, BEE WISE, Aquaponics in the Greenhouse, and a Greenhouse project.

EcoVision is a five time winner of an A+ for Energy Award.

It is also a Caring for the Watershed Contest 2014 1st Place Winner for an Aquaponics Food System & 2016 2nd Place Winner for the Lacombe Irrigation Foods Experiment (LIFE).

Additional accolades in recent years also include an Emerald Ron Kruhlak Award in 2017 for Bee Wise project, 2018 Canadian Green Building Council Greenest School in Canada, and 2019 teacher won PM’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

EcoVision has been nominated for an Alberta Emerald Award in the Education category. Other legacy categories include Business, Community Group or Non-Profit, Youth, and Lifetime Achievement.

The 30th Annual Emerald Awards will be presented virtually on June 1.
