Red Deer down to 523 active cases of COVID-19

The downward trend when it comes to Red Deer’s active COVID-19 case count continues.

Friday’s numbers from the province show the city with 523 active cases. That’s down from 548 on Thursday and down 34.8 per cent from a week ago when the total was 802.

Recoveries are up to 4,867 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose 31 to 5,429.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 39.

According to the province’s interactive vaccination map, 48,759 (45.8% of) Red Deer residents have received at least one dose of vaccine, up 1,991. That total includes 7,976 (7.5%) people who are fully vaccinated, up 183. (*based of AB Gov’t population of 106,395 for Red Deer)

The Central Zone has 1,726 active cases as of Friday, a drop of 88. There are 62 hospitalizations, down four, and 12 people are now receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down three. The zone has had 151 deaths linked to the virus, including one reported in the past day.

Province-wide, Alberta reported another 732 cases of COVID-19 Friday out of 10,130 tests for a positivity rate around 7.4 per cent. The one week average is 9.56 per cent.

Active cases sit at 16,577, down 1,188 from Thursday, while recoveries are up to 204,270.

There are 638 Albertans in hospital because of the virus, down 27, including 177 in intensive care, the same as yesterday.

Two additional deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported over the past 24 hours to bring Alberta’s total to 2,164. They include:

· Date of death: May 19. A female in her 80s in Central Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: May 19. A male in his 60s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

There were 266 new variant cases of concern identified over the past 24 hours.

Alberta has delivered 2,401,932 doses of vaccine as of Thursday, with 341,610 people now fully immunized with two doses.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province’s chief medical officer of health, shared Friday that the previous 24-hour period saw a record 77,043 doses administered by AHS and pharmacies.

Across the province, 46.1 per cent of the eligible population has received at least one dose, with 7.6 per cent fully vaccinated.
