Calgary schools to shift to at-home learning for grades 7 to 12

CALGARY – The Alberta government says schools in Calgary will move to at-home learning starting Monday for students in grades 7 to 12.

The change, due to COVID-19, is to last for two weeks.

Alberta Education says it approved requests from public and Catholic schools in the city to make the move to online learning.

Education Minister Adriana LaGrange says in a statement that some school boards are dealing with operational pressures due to rising COVID-19 cases.

“While everyone’s preference is to learn in school, some school boards are dealing with operational pressures due to rising COVID-19 cases in the community,” said LaGrange. “By having a clear process in place, we are giving them flexibility to move to at-home learning when necessary.”

Chief medical health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw says there has been a sharp rise in cases among school-aged Albertans.

“While this is an operational decision, I support it and ask that parents and students continue making safe choices to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Social activities outside of school can easily spread the virus, so please continue following all the health measures in place,” noted Hinshaw.

NDP Education Critic Sarah Hoffman says it’s clear that Premier Jason Kenney doesn’t have any idea what’s happening inside Alberta classrooms or communities, after he said earlier on Wednesday that that less than one per cent of students had been affected by the third wave of COVID-19.

“He has failed to give Alberta schools the resources they need to keep classrooms safe. The reasons the UCP gave for moving these students are exactly the factors we warned them about,” Hoffman said. Staff shortages, school closures, too many students in isolation, and community spread. All of these problems were foreseeable months ago, and Jason Kenney did nothing.”
