Red Deer with 459 active COVID-19 cases as Olymel numbers continue to drop

There continues to be a steady decrease in the number of active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at Olymel in Red Deer.

Alberta Health says that as of Tuesday there are 91 active cases from the outbreak, down 31 from Monday’s total of 122 and a 57per cent drop from the peak number of 212 active cases reported on February 19.

The total number of COVID-19 cases stemming from the Olymel outbreak now sits at 511. There have been 418 recovered cases and three deaths as a result of the outbreak.

City-wide, the number of active cases in Red Deer as of Tuesday sits at 459, a decrease of 40 from Monday.

There have now been 2,321 recoveries, an increase of 52 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 13 to a total of 2,806.

The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 now stands at 26 after one more was reported to Alberta Health over the past 24 hours. The death of a man in his 80s on February 28 is linked to the outbreak at Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge.

Alberta announced another 257 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. That’s out of 5,864 test results for a positivity rate of 4.4 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is 4,631, a decrease of 43 from Monday. Recoveries are up 298 to a total of 127,531.

There are now 261 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, four more than Monday, including 54 in intensive care, up six.

Two additional COVID-19 deaths were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 1,890.

As of Tuesday, there have been 492 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 35 over the past day, including 484 cases of the UK variant.

Alberta has administered 245,054 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of March 1.

The Central Zone has 636 active cases, down 36 from Monday, and 33 hospitalizations. Eleven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has now had 112 COVID-related deaths.

Currently, 228 Alberta schools, about 9.4 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 876 cases in total. 168 schools are on alert, with 357 total cases. Outbreaks are declared in 60 schools, with a total of 519 cases. In-school transmission has likely occurred in 164 schools. Of these, 99 have had only one new case occur as a result.
