Tough loss

Rebels mauled 7-2 by Medicine Hat

Feb 27, 2021 | 10:44 PM

The Medicine Hat Tigers capped off an opening weekend sweep of the Red Deer Rebels with a 7-2 triumph Saturday night at the Co-op Centre in Medicine Hat.

The Tigers pounced early and often as they stormed out to a 4-0 first period lead. Cole Clayton started things off as his wrist shot from the point just 36 seconds into the game handcuffed Bryon Fancy, who got the start in net for Red Deer, for a 1-0 lead.

It was 2-0 just under two minutes later after Ryan Chyzowski beat Fancy for a power play tally at the 3:34 mark.

Lukas Svejkovsky made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season at 12:11. Oasiz Weisblatt made it 4-0 when he forced a turnover before beating Fancy high to the short side for his first WHL goal. That spelled the end of the night for Fancy as he was replaced between the pipes by Ethan Anders after allowing four goals on 12 shots.

The Rebels calmed things down in the second period and scored the lone goal of the middle frame. Chris Douglas lit the lamp with his second goal in as many nights, beating Tigers goalie Garin Bjorklund through the five hole to make it a 4-1 game at the 18:26 mark. Mason Ward and Jayden Grubbe assisted on the goal.

Red Deer pulled within 4-2 at the 4:22 mark of the third period when a point shot from Chase Leslie deflected off of a stick and past Bjorklund. Jaxsen Wiebe and Arshdeep Bains earned the helpers on Leslie’s first goal of the season and fourth of his WHL career.

That would be as close as the Rebels would come to making a comeback in this one. Brayden Boehm made it 5-2 at 12:08 with his first WHL goal on a great setup by Caleb Willms.

With the Rebels net empty in favour of the extra attacker, Brett Kemp fired the puck the length of the ice and in for a 6-2 Tigers lead with 2:08 left to play.

The Tigers added one more after that as Willms authored another nice setup, this time to Red Deer native Noah Danielson who tapped the puck past Anders for his first goal of the year and third of his career.

Final shots on goal in the game were 33-21 in favour of Medicine Hat. The Tigers went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Rebels were 0-for-1.

The next game for the Rebels is Friday, March 5 when they visit the Calgary Hitmen. Game time on 106.7 REWIND Radio is 7:30 p.m.
