Red Deer up one to 565 active COVID-19 cases

Alberta confirmed 273 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

That’s out of 6,062 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 4.5 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 4,675, a decrease of 83 from Sunday. Recoveries are up 340 to a total of 124,818.

There are 324 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up three from Sunday, including 53 in intensive care.

Sixteen additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Sunday to 1,833. The deaths occurred between Dec. 4 and Feb. 20.

As of Monday, there have been 289 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, 282 of which are the UK variant.

Alberta has administered 173,539 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of Feb. 21 and there are 69,362 Albertans fully vaccinated with two doses.

The record number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Monday sits at 565, up one from Sunday. There have been 2,020 recoveries, an increase of 25 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 26 to a total of 2,607. The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 remains 22, unchanged since Feb. 5.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Monday, there are 198 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer, a one-day decrease of seven, along with 256 recoveries. Total cases stemming from the outbreak sit at 455 , including one death.

The Central Zone has 760 active cases as of Monday, a decrease of six, with 35 hospitalizations, up three. Nine people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, up one. The zone has had 102 COVID-related deaths, including one reported in the past 24 hours (a male in his 90s on Dec.17. The case included comorbidities).

Currently, 235 Alberta schools, about 10 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 840 cases in total. There are 179 schools on alert (two or more cases), with 382 total cases. Outbreaks (10 or more cases) are declared in 56 schools, with a total of 458 cases. The province says in-school transmission has likely occurred in 145 schools. Of these, 89 have had only one new case occur as a result.

The R value in Alberta was 1.03 (0.98-1.07) from Feb. 15-21:
