Red Deer had seven opioid-related deaths in November

Newly released figures from the Alberta government show seven people died in Red Deer in November due to opioid poisoning.

That brings the number of opioid-related fatalities in Red Deer through the first 11 months of 2020 to 51. Of them, 39 were connected to non-pharmaceutical opioids such as fentanyl and heroin.

Red Deer had 24 opioid-related deaths in all of 2019 and 60 in 2018.

The Central Zone as a whole saw 116 opioid-related deaths through the first 11 months of 2020, including 11 in November. There were 72 such deaths in the zone in 2019 and 109 in 2018.

The Government of Alberta has launched a new interactive website with full details on substance use in the province.

In November, 106 Albertans died due to opioid poisoning, bringing the provincial death toll for 2020 to 997.

Calgary saw 39 opioid-related deaths in November, Edmonton 38, Grande Prairie had six, Fort McMurray and Medicine Hat each recorded one while Lethbridge had none.

Provincial statistics show that 77.5 per cent of those who died from opioid poisoning were males, mostly between the ages of 35 to 39 (118 deaths), followed by males aged 30 to 34 (112) and males aged 25 to 29 (98).

The remaining 22.5 per cent of Alberta’s opioid poisoning deaths through 11 months of 2020 were females, mostly between the ages of 25 and 34.
