Red Deer with 276 active COVID-19 cases, up one from Sunday

Alberta confirmed 269 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

That’s out of 6,184 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of about 4.3 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province is down to 6,196, a decrease of 46 from Sunday. Recoveries are up 314 to a total of 119,130.

There are 432 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, down four from Sunday, including 76 in intensive care, down five.

There have been five additional COVID-19 deaths reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours. Four previously reported deaths have been determined post-mortem to not have COVID-19 as a contributing cause and have been removed from the provincial total. The net increase of one which brings the province’s total as of Monday to 1,710.

Over the weekend, 25 additional cases of COVID-19 variants have been identified, for a total of 96 B-117 cases. Of those, 46 are not linked to travel. Dr. Deena Hinshaw said there has been no spread identified in schools and the province continues to test widely.

Alberta has administered 102,357 doses of COVID-19 vaccine. More than 29,000 Albertans have now received two doses and are fully inoculated.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Monday sits at 276, up one from Sunday. There have been 1,742 recoveries, an increase of 18 as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 17 to a total of 2,040. The number of deaths in Red Deer because of COVID-19 remains 22.

Alberta Health confirms that as of Monday there are 126 active cases linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Olymel pork processing facility in Red Deer.

“All cases on the online maps are reported based on the patient’s primary address. So, if they live in Sylvan Lake but work in Red Deer, they would appear online in the Sylvan Lake area,” spokesperson Tom McMillan noted.

The Central Zone has 689 active cases as of Monday, a decrease of five, with 33 hospitalizations, which is an increase of one. Four people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, unchanged from Sunday. The zone has had 97 deaths as a result of COVID-19, none of which were reported in the past 24 hours.

Currently, 313 schools, about 13 per cent, are on alert or have outbreaks, with 844 cases in total. There are 273 schools are on alert, with 511 total cases. Outbreaks (10 or more cases) are declared in 40 schools, with a total of 333 cases. In-school transmission has likely occurred in 76 schools. Of these, 61 have had only one new case occur as a result.

Step 1 of the province’s Path Forward plan began today. School-related and limited indoor and outdoor children’s sport and performance activities, one-on-one indoor personal fitness with a trainer, and dine-in service at restaurants, cafés and pubs are now permitted province-wide. The Path Forward plan has targets for easing restrictions based on hospitalization rates. Specific hospitalization numbers will be the benchmarks by which restrictions will be eased.
