Sylvan Lake launches crime mapping tool

Feb 4, 2021 | 2:41 PM

Sylvan Lake RCMP is partnering with the Town to launch a publicly-accessible crime map.

Residents can see where certain types of crime have happened within their detachment’s boundaries. Crimes are categorized into categories such as theft, theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicle, mischief, and break and enter.

Only approximate locations are shown in order to protect the identity of victims, and only crimes that took place within the last 14 days show up on the map.

“This will have a direct benefit to all citizens, communities and counties we serve” says Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth, Detachment Commander. “If you notice that theft is occurring in your neighbourhood, or rural property, ensure you’re not leaving items that could be easily stolen. Most thefts are crimes of opportunity, which means that the criminal is looking for unlocked vehicles or residences where items can be taken quickly and easily.”
