RCMP in Ponoka are commending alert citizens in helping Mounties arrest a suspected thief last week.

Police say a series of citizen calls on Jan. 29 led officers to locate the individual and arrest him on site.

According to RCMP, homeowners of a residential property in Morningside reported that a male arrived on their property in a car, and entered one of their vehicles. After confronting the male, he allegedly fled on foot carrying a duffle bag.

RCMP attended and determined that the vehicle he arrived in was reported stolen out of Calgary.

Mounties say a call from a second homeowner was then received, indicating that the man was on another property checking doors. However, he left and reportedly went to a third residence.

RCMP located the male, sitting in a truck at the third residence. The male was arrested without incident. RCMP seized several break-in tools from the suspect’s duffle bag.

Shawn Andrew Alexis, 33, is charged with theft of truck, possession of stolen property, mischief, possession of break-in instruments and two charges under the Petty Trespass Act.

At the time of his arrest, Alexis was wanted on numerous arrest warrants out of Calgary.

Alexis has been released and is scheduled to attend court on Feb. 26 in Ponoka.
