Red Deer windstorm knocks out power to 7,500 customers

Power outage breakdown (in the city)

Northwest: approximately 250 customers impacted — Edgar, Queens — lasted 25 minutes
East: approximately 2,500 customers impacted — Timberlands, Clearview Ridge, College Park, Clearview Meadows, Michener Hill, Rosedale, Eastview, Deer Park – lasted 35 minutes
South: approximately 4,800 customers impacted — Capstone, South Hill, Bower, SouthPointe Junction, RDP, West Park

Walker says one power pole came down in the Timberlands area and will need to be replaced; however, a temporary fix is in place.

Another pole was damaged in the southern portion of the city, but it was salvageable.

“We appreciate the public reporting those issues, and also staying away so crews could complete their work,” said Walker.

Walker also said this was about the hardest the city has been hit since the fateful windstorm of June 2017.

For future electrical issues related to city infrastructure, the public can call 403-342-8274 to speak to someone in EL&P 24/7.

Proctor also shared that from 12-3 p.m., there were 624 lightning strikes in an area from Innisfail in the south to Ponoka in the north, and from Eckville in the west to Stettler in the east.

Proctor said that amount is somewhat atypical for this late in the season, but isn’t unheard of.
