Tourism is among the Alberta business sectors that have been greatly impacted by the prolonged public health restrictions in place due to COVID-19.

Stakeholders with the local tourism industry are invited to take part in a Telephone Town Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) with Premier Jason Kenney, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Martin Long, Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Tourism.

They’ll be answering questions about restrictions and the spread of COVID-19, and will discuss ways businesses can help limit spread to keep Albertans safe. Officials will also answer questions about Alberta’s Recovery Plan and how government can continue to provide support during these difficult times.

“What this does is connect the people that are directly affected to the decision makers,” explained Rene Rondeau, Tourism Red Deer’s executive director.

The biggest thing is there are a lot of business that are hanging on to survive during this situation we are in, a pandemic, we want to make sure they’re taken care of.”

Wednesday’s town hall, hosted by the Ministry of Jobs Economy and Innovation, comes as the Alberta government prepares to loosen its current COVID-19 restrictions on restaurants and gyms on February 8.

Rondeau says they want to help local stakeholders better understand and appreciate the impact of the lockdown and the changes.

Those interested in taking part Wednesday night (5-6:30 p.m.) can email rene@tourismreddeer.com.
