Red Deer records two new COVID-19 deaths for 15 total

Alberta Health is reporting that Red Deer has once again dipped below 200 active cases of COVID-19.

Red Deer sat at 191 on Nov. 29, peaked at 434 on Dec. 19, went below 300 on Dec. 28, and slipped to 196 on Jan. 14 before minor increases the last two days.

On Sunday, the city is down from 210 to 195. However there were still 10 new cases recorded for a pandemic total of 1,701, and 23 more people have recovered for 1,491 in all.

Red Deer’s death toll went up by two on Sunday for 15 since the first was reported by Alberta Health on Dec. 18. The two latest deaths are of a male in his 60s on Jan. 14 and a female in her 80s on Jan. 15. The province has not linked either one to existing outbreaks.

The province added 19 more deaths to the overall total today, with 1,436 to date.

Of the 19, one occurred on Nov. 28, and another on Dec. 13. Two others happened on Jan. 4 and 5, leaving 15 more which took place between Jan. 14 and 16.

Alberta Health is also reporting 750 new cases today out of 11,484 tests for a positivity rate of 6.5 per cent. That’s about 0.7 per cent higher than Saturday’s rate.

A total of 103,167 Albertans have recovered, an increase of 1,210 since yesterday. This means active cases dropped from Saturday’s total of 12,713 to 12,234.

There are 738 people in hospital, down 27 for a two-day drop of 58. There are 123 people in ICU, up one from Saturday.

The province also updated its vaccination total to 85,935 doses administered, up 4,374.

Around the Central Zone, as noted, there were two additional deaths for a zone total of 70.

Active cases are down from 1,209 to 1,182, with 8,209 cases to date. Hospitalizations sit at 65, down four, and ICU admissions are up one to 12. All ICU admissions in Central Zone are at Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Red Deer County has 47 active cases, up one, the town of Sylvan Lake has 35, even with Saturday, and Olds has 27.

Lacombe County has 28 active cases, down one, and the city of Lacombe has 21, down six.

Ponoka County has 381, an increase of 15, though most cases there are in Maskwacis.

Clearwater County, which includes Rocky Mountain House, has 86 active cases, up two, and Brazeau County, which includes Drayton Valley, has 33, up two.

Mountain View County has 24, up two, Kneehill County has seven, down two, and County of Stettler has six, the same as yesterday.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, will return with another in-person update on Monday.
