New signage policy

Nominations for next municipal election have opened

As of Monday the Town of Rocky Mountain House has begun accepting all nominations for the upcoming general municipal election until September 20.

On October 18 at the Lou Soppit Community Centre residents of legal age will be choosing their next 6 Councillors and Mayor.

A Councillor in Rocky is considered a part-time position but is expected to do extensive research, training, meet with the public and be “on call” full time.

The position of Mayor is similar but is also the chief spokesperson for the town and will also be involved in conversations with other municipalities and decision makers outside of the community.

This year has brought on many difficult and stressful decisions for the current council and will inevitably alter how running this year will look.

In Tuesday’s town council meeting some changes were made to the election signage policy regarding previous grievances made by the public.

Town administration noted that there were a number of complaints regarding signs due to littering, clutter and that some election signs had been placed for over 7 months.

Election signs are now considered temporary signs and may not be posted earlier than 30 days prior to election and must be removed within 72 hours after.

Signs can now only be 1.5 square meters in size and cannot be placed anywhere that would obstruct pedestrians along with many other changes.

The new policy is meant to help reduce the amount of future complaints and clearly outline how peace officers will be able to respond.
