Red Deer County budget includes increased capital spending, no tax increases

Red Deer County council has approved the 2021-2023 Operating and 2021-2025 Capital Budgets.

The budgets were passed Tuesday morning after being tabled for two weeks for public input.

The budget sees the county’s Capital spending increase to $42.4 million from last year’s $32.3 million. A large portion of this is due to large-scale construction at McKenzie Road on the south end of Gasoline Alley (roundabouts).

The Operating budget will also see a slight increase from $54.4 million to $56.8 million.

Thanks to partnerships with other levels of government, the county says it is undertaking significant public works projects while not creating unnecessary tax increases to the public.

“Council has given us clear direction that this budget should find cost savings wherever possible,” said Heather Surkan, Director of Corporate Services. “We have successfully sought out partnerships with other levels of government to reduce the impact on ratepayers who are already going through a very difficult time.”

“Council certainly recognizes the challenges – both financial and personal – brought about by COVID-19,” acknowledge Mayor Jim Wood. “Despite these challenges council remains committed to providing a high level of service and completing important projects that improve the lives of those living and working in Red Deer County. We must not create undue hardship on taxpayers, but we must also ensure our infrastructure is in excellent condition.”

Wood said Red Deer County continues to be able to do what ratepayers are asking and expecting them to do without increasing taxes.

“This is not a one-year thing. This is a trend that’s been happening for many years and we’ve been able to accomplish this because we’ve been able to garner new growth within our region because people want to be in Red Deer County.”

He added, “Even though we’re probably looking at the largest budget I’ve seen in my time on council, I am confident that we will see great value from this budget… to make sure that the county will continue to grow.”
