School Resource Officer program continuing at Clearview Public

Clearview Public Schools is extending its school resource officer (SRO) agreement.

The agreement was set to end on Dec. 31, 2020 after the division gave one-year notice last December that it would be withdrawing from the partnership.

The school resource position was in minimal use over the two years prior to that decision due to RCMP vacancies, the division says.

Last month, however, municipal representatives from the Town of Stettler and County of Stettler met with the school division to express their hope that the SRO position could continue into 2021.

“RCMP representatives also shared the vision this program could have for the benefit of schools and students in the areas of preventive strategies and safety education,” a press release states.

“Following conversations with the delegation, the board of trustees extended the current agreement to June 30, 2021 and Clearview is looking to develop an exploratory committee to consider the future of the school resource officer program, including how this program could be structured financially and operationally for the benefit of all parties to the agreement and the students of Clearview.”

Now, the board chair will coordinate with the municipalities on how to best utilize the SRO partnership in the future. Consultation with families is also on the agenda for early 2021.

Clearview Public Schools runs 10 schools, plus additional schools on local Hutterite colonies in the Stettler region.
