Local poppy campaign a success despite pandemic

Nov 30, 2020 | 2:57 PM

It was a “better than expected” Poppy Campaign for Red Deer Legion Branch #35 this year.

Despite numerous public health restrictions brought on from the COVID-19 pandemic and forcing the elimination of the Legion’s annual two-day poppy blitz, Poppy Campaign Chair JoAnne Whelpton says to date – $23,871 has been raised.

“This figure is subject to change as donations continue to come in,” explains Whelpton. “I wouldn’t call it a surprise, but we were very pleased with the way individuals and companies made a concerted effort to pick up trays and then return the trays to us. Our volunteer force was unable to carry on as in past years delivering and retrieving the trays.”

“It was a very pleasant and successful year under the circumstances,” confides Whelpton. “So a huge Thank You to the public, and all those who participated for their valued support.”
