Olds RCMP arrest two men in possession of stolen SUV after fleeing from police

Nov 5, 2020 | 12:36 PM

Two central Alberta men are facing multiple charges following the recovery of a stolen vehicle and flight from police incident in Olds Thursday morning.

On Nov. 5, at approximately 4:15 a.m., an off duty Olds RCMP officer had finished his shift and was on his way home in his personal vehicle when he identified two males acting suspiciously in a residential area of Olds.

As he approached them, both males are said to have quickly entered an SUV and fled down a pedestrian pathway. The officer recorded the license plate number, called the Olds detachment and learned that the vehicle had been stolen from Red Deer the previous day.

The off duty officer continued to do surveillance on the stolen vehicle until an on duty officer attended the location and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The SUV fled at a high rate of speed, but the officer did not pursue as the driving pattern posed too much potential of danger to the public. Both officers, however, continued patrols of the area as they searched for the suspects.

A short time later, the off duty officer observed two males walking near the downtown core. Although they had changed clothing, he recognized them from his initial observations.

He contacted the on duty officer, relayed their location and both officers were able to surprise and apprehend the two males. The stolen SUV was located a short distance away.

A 21-year-old from the Didsbury area and a 20-year-old from the Red Deer area are facing several charges, including possession of stolen property, dangerous driving, and flight from police.

Olds Detachment Commander S/Sgt. Jim MacDonald says in a press release, “The actions and persistence of these officers certainly speaks to the level of dedication they have to keeping their community safe – both on duty and off duty”.

Olds RCMP is asking anyone who may have further information related to this incident to contact Olds RCMP at 403-556-3323 or your local police service.
