RCMP investigating suspicious incident near Central Middle School

Officials with Red Deer’s Central Middle School are sending out a safety message to parents following a suspicious incident near the school this week.

In a letter to parents on Thursday, Principal Darrin DeMale outlines that on Sept. 16 during pick up after school, a male allegedly approached a parent’s vehicle while parked in the vicinity of the school.

“It is understood this male may have attempted to enter the vehicle. There was no physical harm to anyone,” DeMale wrote, noting the incident was reported to RCMP who are investigating.

“Throughout the investigation of this matter, our school will be working closely with Red Deer RCMP to assure the safety of our students,” says DeMale. “These events may cause stress for some students. It is important that all of us, parents and school staff, address each child’s concerns and alleviate them to the best of our abilities.”

An RCMP spokesperson said Friday that a suspect has not yet been located.

DeMale noted that throughout the school day, including at drop off and pick up times, there is staff supervision and security services on site.

“Students have been encouraged to walk together in groups and residents in the area are asked to report any suspicious activities to police by calling the non-emergency line at 403-343-5575.”

DeMale says the incident provides a good opportunity to remind students of the Street Smart ‘ABCs’:

• A = Aware – be aware of surroundings and others
• B = Buddy – be with a buddy
• C = Communicate – tell an adult, talk assertively to strangers
• D = Distance – keep your distance from people you do not know
• E = Eyes and Ears – use your eyes and ears to look and listen
• F = Feelings – trust your feelings about situations and act appropriately
• G = Go – go to a safe place, get help
