Crews douse flames at Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary

May 3, 2020 | 9:16 AM

Red Deer Emergency Services members were busy once again Saturday night putting out a fire near the Kerry Wood Nature Centre.

Deputy Chief Chris Kearns says crews responded just before 11:30 to a section of the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary just north of the nature centre.

Crews attacked the blaze in the semi-treed area from two points, one on 45 Avenue, and one on 67 Street near the bridge over the Red Deer River.

“In total, we had five engines, including two bush trucks. We called in the County as well,” Kearns tells rdnewsNOW Sunday morning, adding they were very grateful for the mutual aid.

A treed area on the northwest corner of the Gaetz Lakes Migratory Bird Sanctuary (east of 45 Ave. and south of 67 St.) was where members focused their efforts Saturday night to put out a fire. (Google Maps.)

No structures were damaged and there were no injuries.

“It was contained and under control by 1 a.m., which was pretty quickly given the circumstances. There was potential for it to have been much worse.”

Kearns says it’s too early to say what was the cause of the fire.

The fire remains under investigation.
