PM announces financial support for emergency women’s shelters

Apr 4, 2020 | 10:43 AM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced more financial support aimed at helping the most vulnerable Canadians survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

The contribution is worth $200 million dollars to provide shelter for women fleeing violence, for Indigenous women and the homeless.

“We’ve asked Canadians to self-isolate and to stay home in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But not every home is safe. These investments support hundreds of women’s shelters, sexual assault centres, and Indigenous women’s organizations across the country,” says Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Development.

“Our goal is to support the organizations who provide vital services to survivors of gender-based violence so they can prevent and respond to COVID outbreaks, stay safe and continue being a lifeline to those who need them most. To those experiencing domestic violence and gender-based violence: speak to someone you trust and seek help. You are not alone.”

Women and Gender Equality Canada will receive $40 million, with up to $30 million to address immediate needs of shelters and sexual assault centres.

Up to $26 million be shared by Women’s Shelters Canada to its approximately 575 centres across the country, including in Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House. The other $4 million is for the Canadian Women’s Foundation to distribute amongst its network of sexual assault centres.

Another $10 million will go to Indigenous Services Canada’s network of 46 emergency shelters.

The new announcement follows Friday’s commitment of $100 million dollars for organizations that help get food to Canadians who can’t afford, or have limited access to, groceries and other basic necessities.

It also follows an announcement in recent weeks of $157 million towards the federal Reaching Home program which helps those who are homeless.
