Red Deer Justice Centre construction should start this summer: Province

Provincial officials say that if all goes well, construction of the new Red Deer Justice Centre should be finished by the fall of 2023.

Infrastructure Minister Prasad Panda issued a statement Monday saying that the government has opened the bidding process for contractors to submit their qualifications for the project.

“This vital project will support construction jobs in the architecture, engineering, the skilled trades, and supply chain sectors,” Panda said. “Red Deer has been without an adequate courthouse for some time. This project is important for all of Central Alberta, and demonstrates our commitment to building vital infrastructure around the province.”

Hadyn Place, Panda’s press secretary, says shovels should be in the ground this summer.

“We are working to ensure construction activity begins at the earliest date possible and therefore get Albertans back to work as quickly as possible,” he explained. “However, we should expect to be agile as we respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic. That could impact the construction schedule.”

The $97 million Red Deer Justice Centre project was announced in March 2017 by the former NDP government.

It will be located at the southwest corner of 48 Avenue and 49 Street where the former Red Deer RCMP detachment building once stood. That building has been removed.
