Survey reveals Albertans concerned about debt, job loss, personal finances amid COVID-19 pandemic
New survey results indicate Albertans are more concerned about their finances than ever before.
Officials with MNP LTD. have released their latest Consumer Debt Index Update, and it shows six in 10 Albertans acknowledge they are $200 or less away from not being able to pay all their monthly bills, an 11 point jump since December.
The global crisis surrounding COVID-19 has been identified as an unprecedented financial shock for Albertans at a time when personal finances are already a source of stress for many. The latest MNP Consumer Debt Index compiled earlier this month by Ipsos on behalf of MNP LTD, shows almost half (48 per cent) say they are concerned about their current debt levels, a 4-point jump from the previous wave in December and the highest percentage ever recorded since tracking began in 2017.
Six in ten (58 per cent, +11pts) Albertans are teetering on the brink of insolvency, more than any other province. This includes one in three (33 per cent) who say they are already unable to meet all their debt obligations every month.
