Weekend recap: Jan. 17-18

RED DEER- The College Queens Hockey team earned three of a possible four points against the NAIT Ooks. The Hockey Kings split their weekend series with the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. The Kings Basketball squad defeated the Olds College Broncos and the Basketball Queens dropped their road game in Olds.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Hockey | Friday, Jan. 17 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

With sole possession of second place on the line, RDC Queens had a complete effort and downed the NAIT Ooks 3-2 at home. Jenessa Fournier, Sydney Rowley and Camryn Wallan tallied for the Queens. Ashley Sutherland had two assists. Queens goaltender Madison Fox made 15 saves, picking up the win. The RDC power play was firing, striking twice on three opportunities. “I thought it was a pretty solid 20 person effort, from our goaltender out,” says Queens Head Coach Kelly Coulter.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Jan. 18 | NAIT

The Ooks (10-5-1-0) edged the Queens (10-4-2-0) in a shootout (5-4). Red Deer’s Avery Lajeunnesse scored a hat trick and Mariah McKersie rounded out the scoring. Karlee Fetch made 26 saves. With the single point, the Red Deer College Queens remain alone in second with 22 points. Third place NAIT has 21 points and MacEwan (13-3-0-0) leads the league with 26.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Jan. 17 | U of A Augustana

Nathan Alalouf and the Red Deer College Kings shutout the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 5-0 on the road. Alalouf made 23 saves. Tyrell Mappin, Lynnden Pastachak, Trevor Costello, Carter Wolski and Ryley Smith scored for RDC.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Jan. 18 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Vikings (9-9-0-0) picked up a 5-2 road decision over the second place Kings (13-3-2-0). Austin Hunter and Kyle Salaway found the back of the net for the Kings. The RDC Kings have 28 points in the standings and trail the first place NAIT Ooks (16-2-0-0) by only two points.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Jan. 18 | Olds College

The sixth place Queens (4-7) worked hard, but were downed 100-64 by the Olds College Broncos (10-1) on the road. Lauren Cardinal, a third-year forward, contributed 18 points, four rebounds and one assist.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, Jan. 18 | Olds College

Led by Cody White’s 20 points, the Kings defeated the Broncos 88-75. Kevin Szymanek and Tyronn King added 16 points each. The RDC Kings (6-5) and Briercrest College Clippers (6-5) share third in the south.
