West Central Alberta Justice Committee seeking meeting space in Rocky

The West Central Alberta Justice Committee (WCAJC) is seeking a new location to hold its directors’ meetings and youth panel hearings.

The goal of the WCAJC is give youth offenders from the community a chance to be educated and to impress upon them the need to take responsibilities in their offences and help them become a more constructive and responsible member of society.

Since their creation on February 8, 2006 there meetings had been held in the basement of the town office.

When the WCAJC heard they would have until February 1 they wrote a letter to Council on their behalf and in it stated, “This notice was shocking and disappointing.”

Earlier in the year when this topic was brought up to Council for renewal and that this was taking place after hours, and usually when no one was there, drew concerns, as they believed that having anyone there unattended around such sensitive and personal information of residents, couldn’t continue.

The WCAJC applied for a $500 grant from the town but made clear in their letter that they did not want a cheque, but instead to have that money go directly into helping them find a new location.

Council discussed the situation in the January 7 town hall meeting, in an attempt to clear up the circumstances.

Councillor Dave Auld showed his desire to make the situation easier “can’t we just have them here at a time when we do have people here… it would be a lot simpler than having them move everything.”

Administration explained that the individuals were volunteers and could have conflicting schedules and it was brought up that the youth involved would likely have school, but would consider it as a possible option.

It was also brought up of using the small grant funds to have the Christenson Sports and Wellness center provide an invoice to the Corporate Service Department as an in kind donation from Council to the Recreation Department for the committee to rent a room.

The request from the West Central Alberta Justice Committee for a new meeting space is still under consideration from the Rocky Town Council.
