Rebels blanked 6-0 by soaring Winnipeg Ice

It was another long night for the Red Deer Rebels who lost 6-0 to the East Division-leading Winnipeg Ice (L10: 7-3-0-0) on Saturday night.

The defeat moves Red Deer to 1-3-0-0 on their current five-game road trip and still 11 points back of Saskatoon for the second wild card spot. The Blades also lost on Saturday.

The opening goal came relatively early at Wayne Fleming Arena, Jackson Leppard (15th) putting the Ice up 1-0. On the goal, former Rebels captain Dawson Barteaux earned an assist, his first point with Winnipeg since being traded on deadline day (Friday).

Late in the first and early in the second, Red Deer had powerplay opportunities, but their 19th-ranked unit failed to capitalize. The Rebels have scored on just 16.5 per cent of their man advantage chances this season.

With 1:58 left in the middle stanza, Peyton Krebs (4th) gave the home team some insurance. Despite playing only 19 games this season (achilles injury), Krebs’s 24 points gives him a career-best pts/g (1.26).

Red Deer had no more luck in the third, beginning with Michael Milne (7th) scoring just 2:08 in. Benjamin Zloty (2nd) scored on the powerplay at 4:05 with Chris Douglas in the box for slashing.

Isaac Johnson (14th) then made it 5-0 at 5:57, giving the Ice a trio of goals in a span of just 3:49 to start the third period.

To rub salt in the would, Connor McLennon (21st) made it 6-0 at 10:18; Dawson Barteaux got his second assist of the game on that tally. In his Winnipeg debut, Barteaux got the nod for third star of the game.

Red Deer was outshot 31-28 and went 0/2 on the powerplay. Winnipeg was 1/4.

Ethan Anders (6-12-0-2) made 25 saves, and Liam Hughes (10-3-0-0) earned his second shutout of the season. The Rebels have now been shut out three times in 2019-20, and are yet to earn one themselves.

On their road trip, Red Deer has thus far been outscored 21-8, with the lone win coming in Prince Albert where they came out on top 6-5 in overtime.
