Rebels fall 4-2 in Lethbridge

Dec 12, 2019 | 9:46 AM

The Red Deer Rebels came up on the short end of a 4-2 decision at the hands of the Lethbridge Hurricanes Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge.

It’s the second loss in a row for the Rebels, who return home for two games this weekend before heading their separate ways for the holiday break.

The Hurricanes, meantime, earned their second win in a row despite missing Dylan Cozens, Calen Addison, and Oliver Okuliar to World Juniors tryout camps.

The first period of Wednesday’s game ended scoreless despite Red Deer outshooting Lethbridge 11-4.

At the 13-minute mark, Rebels forward Blake Gustafson laid a nasty hit on Nick Dorrington, which left the Hurricane centre sprawled on the ice. It earned Gustafson a five-minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct.

Ben King opened the scoring for Red Deer 3:43 into the middle frame with his seventh goal of the year.

At 5:24, Noah Boyko put one past Rebels goalie Byron Fancy, who again got the start in place of the injured Ethan Anders.

Justin Hall scored just 20 seconds later to put the Hurricanes up 2-1.

Midway into the period, Alex Thacker scored on a power play to give the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead.

One minute later, Jace Isley scored for the Rebels to cut their deficit to 3-2.

The remainder of the period was filled with another string of penalties, including five-minute fighting majors for Ethan Sakowich and Lethbridge’s Koletrane Wilson.

The final 20-minutes picked up where the previous 20 left off – more penalties. In the first four minutes, Ty Prefontaine was tagged for tripping and Koletrane Wilson for checking from behind. Closing-in on the mid-point in the period, The Canes’ D-Jay Jerome and Rebel Chase Leslie take it on the chin in front of the Rebel’s net and are both given a five-minute major for fighting.

With 90 seconds remaining, Zack Stringer scored a power play goal for Lethbridge to seal the deal on their 4-2 win.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 32-19 on the night. The Rebels were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Hurricanes were 2-for-5.

The Rebels are back in action Friday night at the Westerner Park Centrium versus Medicine Hat (7 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE). They host Swift Current on Saturday.
