Concert in Red Deer tells history of Alberta’s trade union movement

The Red Deer & District Labour Council (RDDLC), in conjunction with the Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) and the Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL,) is pleased to host “Alberta in the Labour Revolt of 1919,” a concert that combines video with live music to tell the story of Alberta’s trade union movement.

The concert and film is part of a four-city tour with stops in Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and ending in Edmonton on the Thanksgiving long weekend with a book signing, panel discussions, and workshops. Background

The concert and film is part of the commemoration of the Great Labour Revolt that swept across Canada in 1919, at the end of World War I. Many Alberta workers were involved in the unprecedented strikes and protests that changed the course of labour history in Alberta and Canada. Workers struck in sympathy with the 35,000 workers who went out in the Winnipeg General Strike which began on May 15, 1919, and ended six weeks later with a bloody police charge on ‘Bloody Sunday,’ June 21. They also struck for reasons in their own workplaces and communities.

Maria Dunn

Maria Dunn coins herself as “a storyteller through song.” She is a Canadian singer, musician, and songwriter and two-time Juno award nominee. To commemorate this 100th anniversary of Canada’s Great Labour Uprising of 1919, the Maria Dunn Trio has updated their Troublemakers: Working Albertans musical multimedia show. The concert features songs from Maria’s 2004 album We Were Good People, some songs from GWG: Piece By Piece and Packingtown multimedia shows, along with a new song Maria has written inspired by the 1919 Telephone Girls, who were the first workers off the job in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. Alberta Labour History Institute

The Alberta Labour History Institute (ALHI) was founded in 1999 with a mandate to collect, preserve, and publicize the stories of Alberta’s working people and their organizations. ALHI’s major form of research is through oral history supplemented with archival and library research.
