Hitmen explode in third period to sink Rebels

Sep 28, 2019 | 11:21 PM

The Red Deer Rebels hung with the Calgary Hitmen for two periods Saturday night. But them came the third.

Calgary scored three times in the final frame to pull away for a 5-1 win over the Rebels at the Westerner Park Centrium.

Calgary struck first under five minutes into the game with a nice wrist shot on the powerplay by Egor Zamula.

Red Deer responded on the powerplay with a shot from the point from captain Dawson Barteaux beat Hitmen netminder Jack McNaughton for a 5 on 3 powerplay goal a little over three minutes later.

Riley Stotts snapped one past Rebels goalie Byron Fancy on the powerplay at the eleven minutes in the first to regain the 2-1 lead.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period.

The Hitmen came out hungry in the third with Stotts silencing the Centrium just nine seconds in the period by tipping home a shot from Riley Fiddler-Shultz for a 3-1 Calgary lead.

Stotts completed the hat-trick at the 9:44 mark after picking up the puck from a dump-in and finishing with a gorgeous shorthanded wraparound.

The Hitmen were not done their as Layne Toter ripped one through traffic for the final goal of the game with 7:16 left to play.

Calgary outshot Red Deer 33-16 on the night.

The Rebels get ready for the Saskatoon Blades to visit Tuesday night at the Westerner Park Centrium. The Pre-game show will start on 106.7 The Drive at 6:30 p.m. with puck drop at 7 p.m.
