Rebels drop second straight against Edmonton to start season

The Red Deer Rebels are off to an 0-2 start to the WHL regular season after losing the second half of a home and home set against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

In the capital Sunday afternoon, Red Deer fell behind and couldn’t catch up, ultimately losing 4-1 after a 4-2 loss at home to Edmonton on Saturday.

Riley Sawchuk (1st), and Jesse Seppala (1st) scored late in the first period and early in the second to put the home team up 2-0.

At 13:34 of the middle frame, Chris Douglas (1st) scored to cut the deficit to 2-1. Zak Smith and Arshdeep Bains got the helpers.

Just over a minute later, the Oil Kings’ Liam Keeler restored the two goal lead and took a 3-1 advantage to the third period.

With 51 seconds left in the game, Sawchuk (2nd) scored again to seal the deal, and shorthanded into the empty net.

The teams combined for 40 penalty minutes, but Edmonton went 0/8 and Red Deer 0/7 on the powerplay.

Edmonton outshot the Rebels 32-21. Ethan Anders stopped 28 of the 31 shots he faced, while Todd Scott made 20 stops at the other end.

Next up for the Rebels is a Friday date with the Hurricanes in Lethbridge (1-0-0-1). The game can be heard on 106.7 The Drive starting at 6:50 p.m.
