Land preparation work is now underway on a new assisted living facility in Red Deer’s Bower neighbourhood.

That according to City officials who note that once finished, anticipate a building permit application to then come forward sometime this fall, and construction to begin soon afterwards.

On Aug. 7, the City’s Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) approved a development permit for Chandos Construction to build a three-storey, 90-unit assisted living facility at 4736 30 Street in Red Deer, site of the former Red Deer Nursing Home.

City officials say 73 parking stalls are planned for both visitors and staff, exceeding current requirements of the City’s Land Use Bylaw (LUB).

Plans call for the building to be finished in vinyl siding with hardie plank trim, pre-finished metal flashing and cultured stone accents. The building’s design also includes a canopy within the front yard, providing weather protection for drop-off of residents.

Amenity areas would include indoor and outdoor space to be used for the enjoyment of facility residents, with multi-purpose spaces to be found inside.

According to officials, outdoor amenity space would be in the building’s courtyard, which is planned to include raised garden beds, pathways, a covered patio and benches.

The roughly $28 million project was announced in March by the previous NDP government, with the hopes of completion for spring 2021.
