Red Deer hit by series of garage break-ins

Aug 28, 2019 | 9:00 AM

City Mounties are investigating a string of garage break-ins throughout Red Deer.

Over the past couple of weeks, numerous posts on social media have reported break-ins to garages in various neighbourhoods including Eastview and Morrisroe.

Cst. Derek Turner with Red Deer RCMP said on Tuesday that they are investigating to see whether the break-ins are connected.

He says there are several things residents can do to help deter prowling thieves from targeting their property, including making sure your garage door is closed and lock at all times.

Parking a vehicle in your driveway close to your garage door, he says, can also be helpful.

Turner also suggests following the #9PMRoutine promoted by Alberta RCMP that includes removing valuables and garage door openers from vehicles, locking vehicles, closing your overhead garage door, locking the door from the garage to the house, closing all exterior doors, ensuring windows are closed and locked, and turning on an exterior light.

RCMP also want residents with surveillance cameras to register them at reddeercapture.ca. It’s a voluntary camera registry that records the locations of security cameras in Red Deer. Police can view the list of camera locations, and contact the registered camera owners to obtain potentially valuable evidence for solving crimes.
