Crime mapping leads to proactive policing in Innisfail

Jul 30, 2019 | 3:34 PM

Innisfail RCMP are continuing their efforts in proactive policing in hopes of further deterring crime in the community.

Mounties report between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. on both July 26 and July 27, Innisfail RCMP deployed a two-member bicycle patrol around the town of Innisfail.

Police say the proactive initiative focused on police visibility and interaction with the community and enabled members to gather intelligence and increase enforcement in the community.

According to Innisfail RCMP, property crime such as theft of vehicles, break and enters and thefts from parked vehicles remains a high priority, describing property crimes as mostly crimes of opportunity, which means the criminal is looking for unlocked vehicles or houses where they can easily steal property.

However, through the use of crime mapping, Innisfail RCMP have been able to identify “hot spots” where a larger number of property crimes have been reported within the community.

As a result, bike members focused on targeted patrols around the identified “hot spots” and yielded 13 Provincial Tickets, including liquor and cannabis charges.

In addition, members also laid six Criminal Code charges including breaches of release conditions and impaired driving; issued one Alberta Administrative License Suspension and 12 “positive tickets,” where the public was rewarded for following the law, such as children wearing their bike helmets.

Through the use of intelligence led policing, Innisfail RCMP say they are committed to public safety and will continue to utilize crime reduction strategies moving forward.
