Borouge International, formerly known as NOVA Chemicals, did its part in giving back to central Alberta causes last week.

On Friday, the Borouge International Ethylene One turnaround team, consisting of both permanent employees and contracting partners, gave back to the community during its food drive called ‘food mountain’ and the 50/50 raffle at its Joffre site.

This year, the organization invited 20 contracting partners to take part in the E1 Turnaround drive in an effort to make it bigger than in previous years.

The on-site food drive resulted in 15,685 pounds of food and hygiene donations for the Red Deer Food Bank Society.

“We have a one team mentality for our turnarounds – no matter who your employer is, we all work together towards a common goal of completing our events safely and effectively,” said Marc Wahl, Turnaround Leader at Borouge International. “The concept of Food Mountain is the same; we all come together to work towards one goal to make a positive impact in our community. Our contracting partners that support our work on-site also step up to support our community, and this is one way we can showcase that.”

The first ‘food mountain’ on-site food drive took place in 2024, where they accumulated over 6,000 pounds of food and hygiene items.

“This mountain of food is really a mountain of hope. It stands as a testament to the generosity of Borouge International and the caring companies and tradespeople who support the turnaround,” said Mitch Thomson, Executive Director of the Red Deer Food Bank Society. “Together, they are helping ensure that families across central Alberta know they are seen, supported, and cared for. We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary act of community.”

There were also on-site raffles that went towards other community initiatives.

This year, Building Trades of Alberta hosted on-site 50/50 raffles in support of cardiac care and the upcoming cardiac catheterization lab at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

They raised $17,790 for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation’s Our Legacy campaign.

“We’re extremely excited the Building Trades of Alberta and Borouge International selected the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation’s cardiac catheterization lab as the recipients of the weekly 50/50 during the E1 Turnaround. The support is appreciated and will go towards bringing life-saving cardiac care to central Albertans in 2027. We’re grateful both the Building Trades and Borouge International recognize the importance of this project for our community,” said Manon Therriault, CEO of the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation.

Meanwhile, Borouge International says they have a strong history with the United Way Central Alberta, which holds an annual campaign that routinely raises between $500,000 to $700,000.

During the E1 turnaround, an additional 50/50 was held to support fundraising efforts, with over $15,000 going to United Way later this month.

“People know NOVA Chemicals as a company that is committed to our local community. Though our branding may have changed, we will continue supporting critical organizations in our community like the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, the Red Deer Food Bank Society, and Central Alberta United Way because we know a strong community benefits everyone,” said Rob Thompson, Senior Vice President Operations – Americas at Borouge International.
