Councillor wants to bring VLTs back to Rocky

Jul 5, 2019 | 3:40 PM

A member of Rocky Mountain House Town Council wants to allow video lottery terminals (VLTs) back into the community.

Councillor Jason Alderson brought up the idea at this week’s council meeting.

In a 2009 plebiscite 874 out of 1,150 voters (76%) elected to maintain a VLT ban in Rocky that came after a plebiscite in 1997.

Alderson feels times society has changed enough since then that VLTs aren’t the taboo they once were.

“It seems a little silly to me that we can have smoking and marijuana use and alcohol in this society, but VLTs are where we draw the line,” he explained. “What it comes down to is somebody’s choice. They either want to or don’t want to – if they’re legal age – and I think they should have that choice.”

Chief Administrative Officer Dean Krause explained to council that they would not have hold another plebiscite in order to allow VLTs.

“The town actually has no authority to ban VLTs,” noted Krause. “The Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission respects the wishes of the municipality and they just won’t issue licenses there (if they choose), so you would not have to go to a plebiscite.”

Council passed a motion to discuss the issue with the community and businesses to get their opinions on the matter.

The issue will be brought back to council in September.
