shots fired at police

One sentenced, trials booked for two in May Long Weekend police chase

One person has been sentenced while trials have been scheduled for two others charged in a string of incidents on May Long Weekend that included a chase where suspects fired shots at police.

The events started overnight on May 17 when Rimbey RCMP were dispatched to a residential break and enter in progress where a firearm was produced. The suspects fled the scene in a stolen truck spotted 30 minutes later speeding near Bentley. The suspect vehicle went down a dead-end township road and entered a ditch, police say. An unknown number of people fled from the vehicle into a wooded area, and one female was arrested.

The truck swerved at RCMP members who were trying to deploy a tire deflation device. The suspects jumped into the white truck and RCMP members pursued it to Sylvan Lake where multiple shots were fired at police. During the pursuit, a female fell from the truck and was arrested without incident.

The truck was located unoccupied a short distance away, having collided with a parked vehicle. A loaded firearm was recovered from the vehicle.

On May 19 at 1:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a break and enter in the Sylvan Lake industrial area and were swerved at by a suspect vehicle. An officer discharged their firearm at the vehicle, but no one in the vehicle was injured. A second suspect vehicle, a truck stolen from the industrial property, fled through fencing and was pursued, stopping a short time later, due to mechanical failure. A male was arrested without incident.

Then on the afternoon of May 21 a male suspect was taken into custody without incident after he was arrested driving a stolen car.

Tyler Harris, 23, of Red Deer pleaded guilty on Wednesday to two counts of break and enter, flight from police and two counts of breach of recognizance. Harris was sentenced to 30 months behind bars, minus 114 days’ credit for time spent in custody.

Zacharias Paradoski, 32, faces 39 counts that include using a firearm in the commission of an offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, break and enter and disguise with intent. A two-day trial for Paradoski has been scheduled for Sept. 24-25 in Red Deer provincial court.

Samantha Johnston, who is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking and breach of recognizance, will stand trial on Dec. 10 in Red Deer provincial court.

The fourth person, Danelle Rickett, 32, is due back in court on June 25 to speak to charges of possession of stolen property over (and under) $5,000, and joyriding.
