Thurber students to share thoughts on climate change, reducing energy consumption

Jun 10, 2019 | 6:13 AM

In March this year, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School won a spot at the annual Youth Energy and Climate Change Leadership Summit.

Four science students were selected by lottery to go to the event and were accompanied by two science teachers. The Summit was unique as it brought together a huge coalition of energy companies, inventors, activists and leaders for three days in Canmore.

The message was one of balance, hope and innovation all revolving around Climate Change. Oil companies, energy companies and green tech all showed off their best ideas and answered tough questions from the students who came from all over western Canada.

Highlight activities were the expert round table discussions where students sat for 20 minutes with an energy expert, listened to their job, their company and their perspective, asked questions and then moved on to a new expert.

Students got hands-on with advanced solar technology, learned how a drilling rig worked and even sat in a Tesla. Peter Katz (Juno nominated artist) provided a powerful musical message about perseverance and self-confidence.

Any interested members of the public are invited to come on June 13 at 6 p.m. to Lindsay Thurber for a short (approx. 60 minutes) information night to get the student perspective of this event and get some hands-on time with some items you can use in your home to reduce your energy consumption.

If you have questions, call the school at 403-347-1171 and ask for Mr. Zackowski.
