Cleanup is underway after 10,000 litres of oil was spilled at a site west of Blackfalds.

Vesta Energy tells rdnewsNOW that an incident took place Wednesday at around 4 p.m. at a well site of theirs along Range Road 280 north of Aspelund Road.

“Vesta Energy Ltd. experienced a pipeline release of oil and produced water during construction activities on a well site located approximately six kilometers from Blackfalds,” the company said in a statement.

“The pipeline was immediately depressurized and isolated. There were no injuries. The size of the spill is estimated at ten cubic meters. The site is being cleaned up and there is no impact to wildlife or watercourses.”

Nearby landowners and the Alberta Energy Regulator have been notified.

The AER adds in a statement that it has not verified the amount of oil emulsion which was released.

“AER staff have been in contact with Vesta Energy to ensure all safety and environmental requirements are met during the response to the incident,” it says.

10,000 litres is equal to 10 cubic metres, or roughly 63 barrels of oil.
