EDMONTON- Alberta Health Services says the death toll from lab-confirmed influenza in the province so far this season has reached 86.

AHS says there have been 30 deaths in Calgary, 20 in the Edmonton zone, another 20 in central Alberta, 10 in the north and six in the south.

The last time the province experienced more flu-related deaths was in 2014-2015, when 103 people died of the virus.

There were 64 flu-related deaths in Alberta last year and 62 the year before.

Across the province 2,829 people have been hospitalized with the flu.

The report shows majority of the cases are the Influenza A strain of the virus.

AHS warns that the flu season isn’t over just yet and reminds people to wash their hands, cover their coughs and stay home if they’re sick.

The health agency says more than 1.2 million vaccinations have been given this season, which is an immunization rate of about 27 per cent of the population.
