Red Deerians have a chance this weekend to help raise money and awareness for those living in the aftermath of a workplace tragedy.

The Annual Steps for Life event takes place at the Bower Ponds Main Stage area on Saturday, May 5 and offers participants the chance to be involved in a 5 km fundraising walk that supports families dealing with a workplace death, injury or disease.

It’s described as a unique way to educate the community about the devastating ripple effects of a workplace tragedy and how people can work together to prevent others from being injured or killed on the job.

Wynny Sillito, Event Spokesperson, Steps for Life – Red Deer and workplace injury survivor himself, says in a press release that with each step we take, we raise funds and awareness of the importance of safety in the workplace.

“As a safety professional and Steps for Life spokesperson, I speak on behalf of those who need a voice so that everyone’s someone makes it home safely at the end of each and every work day.”

Officials say the Steps for Life event is the premier fundraiser for Threads of Life, a national charity which supports families affected by workplace tragedy.

Thirty Steps for Life walks will be taking place across Canada this spring including Red Deer’s on May 5.

As of this writing, $8,378 or 20 per cent of the campaign’s $40,000 goal has been raised.
